C Dioner Navarro leaves the game in third inning

Update 2:38 p.m. C Dioner Navarro, who suffered a left thumb contusion after getting hit by an errant pickoff throw, said he hopes it isn't serious, but won't know for sure until further evaluation and possible x-rays in Port Charlotte.

"It hurts," he said. "Hopefully, it's just a contusion and nothing else, I'm out a few days and get back on track," Navarro said.

Navarro said the ball hit him near the top of the thumb, and it snapped back. He was in so much pain, he nearly didn't go to second base.

"Big-big scare," he said. "Hopefully it's not a big deal."

Developing: Rays C Dioner Navarro left Thursday's game in the third inning holding his left hand after getting hit by an errant pickoff attempt.

Navarro, on base due to a fielder's choice, dove back to the first base bag on a throw by Pirates LHP Jack Taschner. Navarro advanced on the wild throw, but once he got to second, he called time and was attended to by Rays assistant athletic trainer Paul Harker before heading to the clubhouse.

He was replaced by Jose Lobaton.
