C Nevin Ashley designated for assignment

To make room for Luke Scott on the 40-man roster, the Rays designated for assignment C Nevin Ashley.

Ashley, 27, has yet to be play in the majors. He spent most of last season at Double-A Montgomery, hitting .280 with 6 homers, 33 RBIs and a .387 on-base percentage. He didn't do as well after a promotion to Triple-A Durham, hitting .218-2-15 with a .273 OBP.

Ashley had made a good impression on manager Joe Maddon during the previous two springs, and he actually joined the Rays for the 2010 playoffs (though was not active) when Dioner Navarro declined to stay with the team after being left off the postseason roster.

He also gained notoriety because his wife's name is Ashley Ashley, which she uses in her business, A2 Photography, accessible at ashleyashleyphotography.com.

Ashley could remain in the Rays organization if he clears waivers.
