Cooper Stone, son of fallen firefighter, will throw out first pitch

The Rangers will likely have a heavy heart as a very special kid throw out today’s ceremonial first pitch.

Cooper Stone, the 6-year-old son of local firefighter Shannon Stone – who died from injuries sustained in a fall at Rangers Ballpark July 7 – will perform the duties. It will be his first trip back to the stadium since his father passed away. Mr. Stone was reaching over the left field rail to catch a foul ball tossed to him by OF Josh Hamilton, and then fell about 20 feet and died later that evening.

Stone will throw the pitch to his favorite player, Hamilton. Rangers co-owner and team president Nolan Ryan said he’s maintained contact with Cooper’s mother, Jenny, and they discussed whether they’d want to come out to another game this season, leaving it up to them when they were ready. They touched base in the last few weeks of the year, and they made it happen.

“He represents what we believe we’re about,” Ryan said.
