Crawford re-strained shoulder on Friday

June

UPDATE, 2:58: Manager Joe Maddon said Crawford was feeling "a little bit better," but there was no timetable yet for his return. "I don't know 100 percent as to when he's going to be able to come back or play in the outfield or even DH, I'm not sure.'' Maddon said head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield said there was "an outside shot" Crawford could play Sunday. Maddon also said if Crawford did reinjure himself Friday it was probably on the slide into second. He also said the most encouraging news was that Crawford said he felt better. "That's almost good if he felt something in a negative way last night and that today he feels better could kind of indicate it might not be anything too severe.''

DEVELOPING: LF Carl Crawford said he re-injured his left shoulder during a pinch-running appearance in Friday's game, but he also said he hopes to return to the lineup on Sunday.

Crawford said he told Rays manager Joe Maddon he would be available to pinch-run, but it turned out to be a bad idea as he had to dive back repeatedly to first base and then was thrown out trying to steal second.

"I kind of strained it again (Friday), so I was a little disappointed about that,'' Crawford said. "I told them before the game I could run but I didn't think nothing would happen. I kind of hurt it again doing that. Hopefully, we'll be a little more cautious today. I'd still like to try to run if I could but I'll just have to find a way of not using my arm when I dive back to the base or when I slide.''

Crawford said he was disappointed that he hurt it again, not that he was used in the game since he had offered.

Crawford said the shoulder has "gotten a little better" and he has "hope" to play on Sunday, though he has yet to try to throw. He said there has been no MRI exam and no talk yet of going on the DL. "I have to feel like I can play,'' he said. "That's simple. When I feel like I can play I'll be back in the lineup. I just have to feel like I can do what I do on the field.''
