Damon does Detroit
UPDATE, 9:32 AM SUNDAY: For what it's worth, USA Today's Bob Nightengale writes, via Twitter: "The Tampa Bay Rays were the mystery team who nearly landed Damon, out bidding everone but Detroit."
DEVELOPING: The Rays had interest in free-agent OF Johnny Damon, but not at the level of money he ended up getting by agreeing Saturday to a one-year deal with the Tigers for a reported $8-million.
Damon will split time between leftfield and DH. The Rays, Braves and White Sox all were also interested, but none were willing to offer as much as the Tigers, who just a few months ago traded Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson in what were considered cost-cutting moves.
Damon needed a new home after failing to reach agreement to stay with the Yankees.
