Damon to stay a Tiger
Once the Red Sox made a waiver claim on Detroit OF Johnny Damon, the Rays' opportunity to acquire the veteran lefty hitter disappeared. But they got a slight consolation prize Tuesday when Damon announced he would invoke his no-trade clause and remain with the Tigers.
If the Red Sox's true goal was to keep Damon from going to the Rays, or the Yankees, than they were successful even without getting Damon. ESPNBoston.com reported that according to a Red Sox source they "made the waiver claim because they genuinely wanted Damon to join the club for the final month and a half of the season, not to block him from going to another team.''
