Dan Johnson to sign with White Sox

1

February

UPDATE, 6:18: Johnson said he looks back fondly on his time with the Rays - they made the playoffs in each of his three seasons - and said "there's no bitterness at all" about not being resigned. Also, "the memories are irreplaceable.''

Though the Sox are set at first base and DH, Johnson said he is eager for the chance to compete for a job. Having been hampered by a sore wrist much of last season, he said: "My hope is just to be able to stay healthy and go out and prove myself again and work my way back into a relevant role.''

Also, reliever Juan Cruz, who worked 58 games for the Rays last season (5-0, 3.88), signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates.

BREAKING: Dan Johnson, who has hit several huge homers for the Rays, is signing with the White Sox.

Johnson will get a minor-league deal, and try to win a spot on the bench behind 1B Paul Konerko and DH Adam Dunn.

Johnson hit a dramatic homer in a September 2008 game at Boston, then an even more dramatic one this past September with two outs in the ninth to tie Game 162.
