Davis and Niemann have shoulder strains, both could land on DL
Manager Joe Maddon said that both RHPs Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis have shoulder strains, and there's a chance both could land on the disabled list, with an announcement maybe coming tonight.
That being said, Maddon said they were encouraged by results of MRIs of both today with Dr. Koco Eaton, and anticipates that any DL stint will be minimal and precautionary. He said that they'd have options internally to hold them over, with Andy Sonnanstine a possibility to start Saturday. Jeremy Hellickson said he's starting tommorrow for Davis.
"We’re really confident that both are going to be well within a short period of time," Maddon said. "This is one of those cautious moments. I would think maybe if it was closer to the playoffs you might react differently and do something a little bit different to keep them off the disabled list. But for right now, we just thought it was the prudent thing to do to make sure. These are two valuable people to us and we want to make sure it's all done right and we think we have the resources from within to get beyond this moment."
Both Davis and Niemann were sent back to St. Petersburg to get examined after both have been experiencing soreness in the back of their throwing shoulders.
