Davis to stay in pen; Cobb, Archer in mix to start

Manager Joe Maddon said the Rays likely won't move Wade Davis back to the rotation in place of injured Jeff Niemann, and instead are planning on calling up either Chris Archer or Alex Cobb from Triple-A.

Maddon said they "really like" what Davis is doing in the bullpen, and he would talk to Davis about the plan.

"Part of it is I really like where he's at in the bullpen,'' Maddon said. "I think he's doing a great job and he's getting to the point where he and and his body are understanding it better, and his arm - to come back a little quicker, what it takes to get ready. I like him. I'm not afraid of him in a hot moment because he's been there before. He comes out there with the real slow pulse working, he's understanding what's going on, he gets a rigthy and a lefty out, he knows how to control the running game, he's a good fielder. He does a lot of things well. Plus, you're starting to see the 93-94(-mph fastball) again.''

Davis had been in the rotation until "losing" the final spot toward the end of spring training and would have seemed the logical candidate to get his old job back.

"There's definitely that case to be made,'' Maddon said. "You could go in that direction if you choose to. And I don't know that maybe we might not do that at some point with him coming back to the rotation. But for right now, if we can spot one of our young guys and keep him doing what he's doing, I think it makes us better.''
