The day after, silence reigns and Dukes sits
The Rays visiting clubhouse was especially empty before the game tonight, with a group of mostly relievers playing cards at a table.
The day after the Rays bullpen blew a five-run ninth-inning lead in Tampa Bay's 12-11 loss here at the Rogers Center, Rays manager Joe Maddon said he wasn't worried about Tuesday's collapse snowballing into something worse, saying that only happens "if you let it affect you." The good thing for the Rays is that LHP Scott Kazmir has the ability to make put yesterday's game behind them with a good outing.
Maddon benched CF Elijah Dukes, who was 0-for-6 Tuesday and saw his batting average drop to .200. Maddon also said that outfielders coach George Hendrick was going to talk to Dukes about how he jogged after two balls in the left-center field gaps in Tuesday's fateful ninth inning.
Without Dukes in the lineup, we see Jorge Cantu at DH and Josh Wilson at 2B, with B.J. Upton moving to CF and taking over the leadoff spot. Also, Delmon Young moved up a spot to sixth and Brendan Harris, usually in the No. 9 hole, goes to second.
