Ex-Ray Brazelton arrested on domestic battery charge
Former Rays pitcher Dewon Brazelton was arrested in Tampa late Friday night on a domestic battery charge and is being held without bond in the Hillsborough County Jail.
Brazelton, 30, was arrested at International Plaza just before midnight.
Brazelton was the Rays first pick in the 2001 draft with a heartwarming tale of overcoming childhood adversity but didn't pitch very well during four seasons with the team, going 8-23, 5.98 and was traded to San Diego in the first deal after executive VP Andrew Friedman took over following the 2005 season.
Brazelton, who last pitched in the majors in '06 and the minors in '07, still lives in St. Petersburg. He was in the independent leagues in 2009-10 and during this past off-season was trying to catch on with another independent league team. Also, he has gained weight, with the Hillsborough County Sherriff's web site listing him at 6-5, 245. When he pitched he was listed at 215.
