Ex-Rays C Riggans signs with Mets

Former Rays catcher Shawn Riggans, who battled injuries most of his career, signed a minor-league deal (including a spring training invitation) with the Mets.

Riggans, who'd been with the Rays since the 2000 draft, made the opening day roster for the second straight time last season, but was limited to seven games in the majors (and 26 in the minors) due to a right shoulder problem. Over parts of four major-league seasons, he has played in just 64 games.

The Rays will open camp next week with Dioner Navarro and Kelly Shoppach their projected catchers.
