Ex-Rays hitting coach Steve Henderson hired by Phillies
Long-time hitting coach Steve Henderson, let go by the Rays after the season, was hired as the Phillies minor-league outfield/baserunning instructor.
Another former Rays coach, Chuck Hernandez, was hired as the pitching coach for the Phillies Gulf Coast League team. And two former Rays players, reliever Lance Carter and infielder Jorge Velandia, were hired as coaches, both for Class A Williamsport.
Henderson had been with the Rays for 12 seasons, including the 1998 inaugural season, and 2006-09, and was the minor-league coordinator in the interim years. He was the only coach not rehired and was replaced by Derek Shelton, formerly of the Indians.
The Rays connection makes sense, as former Rays GM Chuck LaMar is the Phillies assistant GM for player development and scouting.
The Phillies also announced their Class A Clearwater staff: Dusty Wathan, manager; Dave Lundquist and Kevin Jordan, coaches.
