Expect Cobb on the mound Saturday
Look for RHP Alex Cobb on the mound for the Rays Saturday against the Braves.
Cobb is expected to be named today as the team's choice to take injured RHP Jeff Niemann's place in the rotation. RHP Chris Archer was also being considered. The team is planning to make an announcement today.
Cobb, 24, is the more logical choice. He has the experience of having gone 3-2, 3.42 in nine starts for the Rays last year before August season-ending surgery to remove a blood clot and part of a rib. This season he has been inconsistent at Triple-A, but had a solid five-inning (though 99-pitch) outing on Monday and overall is 1-4, 4.14.
Archer, 23, has no big-league experience, and only 10 starts above the Double-A level, but has what manager Joe Maddon called “a little bit more dynamic arm.” He has been pitching very well at Durhaml, 2-0, 2.00 over his last three starts, 3-4, 4.71 overall.
RHP Shane Dyer was promoted from Double-A Montgomery to Triple-A, according to his agent. Both Dyer and Cobb were scheduled to start Saturday.
Niemann will be out until at least mid-July after breaking his right leg in Monday's game in Toronto.
