Farnsworth's elbow an issue

With Saturday's walkoff win came some concern, as RHP Kyle Farnsworth, the team's de facto closer, is again bothered by tenderness in his elbow and will be out for at least a few days.

“We’re going to try to give it a couple days and hopefully it gets better,’’ Farnsworth said.

The loss of Farnsworth would be significant as he has converted 23 of 29 save opportunites, and the rest of the staff has three.

In his absence, the Rays will use a committee approach, though Joel Peralta, who has been a closer at Triple-A, seems likely to get most of the opportunities.

The Rays are already planning to call up RHP Dane De La Rosa to bolster the bullpen, and manager Joe Maddon said they had some other plans under consideration. That could include the experienced relievers on the roster, such as Mike Ekstrom or Rob Delaney or Jay Buente. Or they could turn to top prospect LHP Matt Moore and use him in relief.
