Gameday live: Rays at Astros

27

March

UPDATE, 4:51: Shields said he treated it like a regular-season start and felt good about what he did. Maddon was pleased. Thayer said his right shin was sore and red, on the way to purple, after being struck by a batted ball, but he didn't think it would set him back in the competition for the final bullpen spot. Though he finished the ninth, he did come out of the game earlier than planned.

UPDATE, 4:01: Rays tie, Rays tie. Ends 4-4 after 10.

UPDATE, 3:59: Run scores on a groundout so its tied 4-4.

UPDATE, 3:55:
What goes around comes around, as Cipriano makes a throwing error on a leadoff bunt, and Astros have tying run on second.

UPDATE, 3:51: Rays take 4-3 lead when Cody Cipriano scores on a two-out wild pitch. He reached on single, went to second on walk, third on double play.

UPDATE, 3:39: Leaping catch in CF by minor-leaguer Contreras to send game to extra innings.

UPDATE, 3:35: Heath Rollins is pitching now and gave up a one-out double to Chris Shelton. Now a two-out walk to ex-Ray Kevin Cash.

UPDATE, 3:22: Thayer takes a comebacker off the shin but after some brief concern and a few test pitches he stays in the game. It's 3-3 going to the ninth.

UPDATE, 3:21: Shields' line is 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R/E, 0 BB, 4 K, 99 pitches/67 strikes.

UPDATE, 3:16: Shields' day is indeed done, having allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings.

UPDATE, 3:06: Shields comes back strong with a 1-2-3 seventh, and that should be it as Dale Thayer is starting to warm.

UPDATE, 3:01: Shields is back on the mound for the seventh, though all the other starters (except C Nevin Ashley) are out, replaced by minor-leaguers (save for Joe Dillon at third).

UPDATE, 2:49: And the next hitter, Chris Shelton, rips a double down the leftfield line. Shields is going to get his work in though, as no one is warming.

UPDATE, 2:47:
And he just gave up another on a 1-0 pitch to Pedro Feliz. Now it's tied 3-3.

UPDATE, 2:46: Shields had been zipping along, but just allowed a one-out single and a two-out homer to Carlos Lee in the sixth, cutting the Rays lead to 3-2.

UPDATE, 2:33: Shields has been sharp, allowing just three hits through five. Rays haven't been doing much at the plate, though Carlos Pena does have two hits, giving him five for the spring.

UPDATE, 2:23: Rays still lead 3-0 batting in the fifth.

UPDATE, 1:57: Shields zips through the third, allowing just one more hit as Michael Bourn doubled over Pat Burrell in left. Still 3-0 Rays.

UPDATE, 1:44:
Another quick inning by Shields as Rays lead 3-0 going to the third.

UPDATE, 1:30:
Solid first inning by Shields, allowing just a wind-blown double. Look for him to work deep into the game, with a target of 105 pitches in his last real tune-up for opening day. He'll work, somewhat lightly, in a minor-league game on Thursday, then face the Orioles on April 6 for real.

UPDATE, 1:18: Rays are starting with a bang here against Wandy Rodriguez, with three runs in the first. Evan Longoria singled in one, Carlos Pena doubled in one and Kelly Shoppach knocked in the third with a sac fly. 3-0 Rays.
