Gameday live: Rays at Red Sox

UPDATE, 4:30: Rays have whittled most of the lead but hang on for 11-9 win.

UPDATE, 3:55: Now it's Carlos Hernandez's turn to not make a good impression as the Rays look to fill J.P. Howell's spot in the bullpen, allowing two runs in the eighth, as the Sox close to 11-6.

UPDATE, 3:44: A little out of sequence here, but while we were in the clubhouse talking to Shields and Longoria, Hank Blalock homered (off ex-Ray Joe Nelson) which makes it 7 for the Rays, their most in any kind of (spring, regular-season, post-season) game. They'd hit six three times in regular-season play.

UPDATE, 3:37: Not a good spring debut for Winston Abreu when a player wearing No. 82 (minor-league INF Ray Chang) hits a three-run homer off you. And then No. 81 (Mark Wagner) triples. Rays lead down to 11-4 in the seventh.

UPDATE, 3:33: Rays lead 11-1 in the seventh. Shields felt good and was pleased with how he responded after his 22-pitch first inning. Longoria said it felt good to get the first homer out of the way.

UPDATE, 3:03: It's a line change for the Rays, with the seven field players all new. Shields is back out to pitch the sixth, and Shoppach is still behind the plate.

UPDATE, 2:59: Shields is through five, having allowed only fours hits and 1 run.

UPDATE, 2:47: That's six homers for the Rays on the day as Sean Rodriguez hits his sixth of the spring. To recap, Shoppach and Longoria have hit two each, Zobrist one. Rays lead 10-1.

UPDATE, 2:41: Now it's Zobrist's turn, and his 2-run homer off Tazawa makes it 9-1.

UPDATE, 2:39: Longoria hits his second homer of the day, a massive shot to LCF that strikes the scoreboard, right where his name was.

UPDATE, 2:34: Shields is through four innings, having allowed two hits.

UPDATE, 2:26: Kelly Shoppach hit his second homer of the day, Rays lead is now 6-1.

UPDATE, 2:20: Word from our man Joe Smith in Port Charlotte: It was a bit of a rough outing for Andy Sonnanstine against the Orioles AAA team: 4 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 2 hit batters (his first two), 1 HR, 69 pitches. Also, Matt Joyce homered and B.J. Upton has two hits.  And Dan Wheeler pitched in the AA game, allowing 4 hits in 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run, striking out 3.

UPDATE, 2:17: Red Sox get on the board as Mike Cameron doubles off Shields, goes to third on a ground out and, after a walk, scored on sac fly by Dustin Pedroia.

UPDATE, 2:02:
It's bye, Boof as he gets pulled after walking Pena and Zobrist.

UPDATE, 1:57: Evan Longoria hits his first homer of the spring on first pitch of the third, Rays lead 5-0.

UPDATE, 1:52: Rays minor-league pitching coordinator Dick Bosman should be smiling, as James Shields just used the move Bosman worked with him on to pick off J.D. Drew to end the second. Rays still up 4-0.

UPDATE, 1:50: Rays take the 4-0 lead into bottom of second.

UPDATE, 1:39: Rays are beating up a bit on St. Petersburg's Boof Bonser, scoring four so far in the fourth. They started with singles by Ben Zobrist and Hank Blalock, then scored on a single by Sean Rodriguez and a three-run homer by Kelly Shoppach, his third of the spring.
