Gameday live: Rays (ss) at Pirates

Update 2:15 The Rays-Pirates game has been rained out. RHP Andy Sonnanstine will pitch Monday, either against the Red Sox or in a minor league game.

Update 1:47: The rain is coming down a bit harder now, and the tarp is still on the field. Not sure how long they are going to wait this out.

Update 1:03: The Rays-Pirates game is in a rain delay, with the tarp still on the field. We'll keep you posted.

Update 1:00 p.m. RF Gabe Kapler has been scratched from the lineup due to right hip tightness, more of a precautionary deal due to the wet fields. Rashad Eldridge will start in his place.

Developing: We're live in Bradenton, where a Rays split-squad will face the Pirates (weather permitting). RHP Andy Sonnanstine, in a tough battle for the fifth rotation spot, is scheduled to start, coming off two strong performances.

Manager Joe Maddon said today that while he expected the "wide-open" competition between Sonnanstine and RHP Wade Davis to go until the end of camp, the decision may come "sooner rather than later" so that the Rays can sort out their bullpen situation without J.P. Howell.

With Howell expected to be out at least the first month due to weakness in his left shoulder, the Rays will have to move things around, and Maddon wants to give relievers enough time to prepare mentally for their roles.
