Gameday live: Rays vs Mets
Update 8:52 p.m. The Rays close out a 4-2 victory over the Mets, giving them 20 wins this spring (and the best record in the majors).
It wasn't without any drama, however, as the Mets put the winning run at the plate in the ninth; but Fernando Tatis' long fly ball was caught at the leftfield wall to end the game.
RHP Matt Garza threw five shutout innings, with DH Pat Burrell (RBI double) and Kelly Shoppach (RBI single) picking up big hits.
Update 8:40 p.m. Lance Cormier gives up a two run homer to DH Mike Jacobs in the ninth.
Rays 4, Mets 2
Update 8:33 p.m. Sean Rodriguez, who found out he made the team today, hasn't stopped making a good impression, ripping a double in the eighth. He then hustled to score from second when a Hank Blalock grounder to first turned into an error.
Rays 3, Mets 0
Update 8:18 p.m. Kelly Shoppach, pinch-hitting for Pat Burrell in the seventh, hit an RBI single to increase the Rays lead.
Rays 2, Mets 0
Update 7:45 p.m. LHP Randy Choate threw a scoreless inning in the sixth, helping his own cause by making two good defensive plays.
Update 7:27 p.m. Garza got out of a jam in the fifth - likely his final inning - largely thanks to a great defensive play by Reid Brignac.
Brignac, playing second base, dove to his left to snag a hard grounder by Fernando Tatis, and threw him out to end the inning.
Rays 1, Mets 0
Update 6:52 p.m. Garza is cruising through three scoreless innings, having struck out five already while giving up just one hit.
Update 6:38 p.m. DH Pat Burrell came through with a two-out, RBI double in the second, giving the Rays an early lead.
Rays 1, Mets 0
Update 6:17 p.m. RHP Matt Garza had an impressive 1-2-3 first inning, including two strikeouts (one of David Wright).
Developing: We're live at Tropicana Field, where the Rays have returned to face the Mets.
RHP Matt Garza will make his last spring start, and bullpen candidate RHP Joaquin Benoit may get a chance to make a final impression.
