Gameday report: Rays vs. Red Sox
UPDATE, 12:13: Lots of tidbits from manager Joe Maddon's pre-game session, among the most interesting that he is still considering, and re-considering, his plans for the middle of the lineup and, despite his earlier statements that Carlos Pena would bat fourth is now looking at the possibility of having Ben Zobrist third, Evan Longoria and Pena fifth. ... Maddon also insisted he was not concerned about the poor spring performance of starting candidate Wade Davis (1-1, 10.24) and threw out the idea that the uncertainty of not knowing his status could be affecting Davis. ... As such, Maddon said the decision on the final spot could be announced before Davis and Andy Sonnanstine (who is throwing in a minor-league game today) pitch again. ... The medical report was somewhat encouraging, with the Rays still hoping C Dioner Navarro (left shin nerve bruise) gets back before the end of the exhibition season, that Matt Joyce (right elbow strain) should return to the outfield Thursday or Friday and that OF Gabe Kapler (right hip tightness) should play Wednesday. ... B.J. Upton is playing in a minor-league game today in order to get additional at-bats. ... Maddon also "thanked" the Twins on behalf of the other AL East teams (Orioles and Jays) for keeping Joe Mauer.
DEVELOPING: The Rays are heading back to Fort Myers today with most of the big names in their lineup for a game against the Red Sox.
