Gameday report: Rays vs. Red Sox
UPDATE, 4:30: Maddon plans to play most of the regulars in the three night games over the next four days, giving them a chunk of at-bats. That means the Wednesday day game against the Twins won't feature many, if any, of the big-name starters. Catchers Dioner Navarro and Kelly Shoppach will both likely catch in the back-to-back games against the Yankees.
Here's more of what Maddon said about Matt Joyce, who they are hoping can return to the outfield sometime next week.
On his status: "We’re hoping by this weekend we’ll start seeing some significant improvement regarding playing catch.''
On whether his absence is hurting his chances to make the team: "He hasn’t missed enough time yet to worry about it, but it could get to that point where he just wont be ready and if he wasn’t ready than that’s a different set of circumstances. So for right now he’s still okay.’’
UPDATE, 4:16: Here is the Red Sox lineup, with two former Rays, Joe Nelson and Jorge Sosa, and St. Petersburg's Boof Bonser, among those scheduled to pitch:
UPDATE, 4:06: Manager Joe Maddon said OF Matt Joyce is still restricted due to his right elbow strain but may hit in minor-league games this week since it doesn't bother him while swinging. Maddon said it was too soon to say Joyce was hurting his chances to make the team, but that if the injury lingers and he can't be ready it could become a factor.
UPDATE, 2:02: C Dioner Navarro is back from this left thumb bruise. Tonight's lineup looks like what the opening day lineup could, save for rightfielder Gabe Kapler and starter Wade Davis.
Here it is:
1:54: The clubhouse has not even opened to the media yet, but there already is news as the Rays optioned their two top prospects, RHP Jeremy Hellickson and OF Desmond Jennings to the minors, along with LHP Alex Torres.
