Gameday report: Rays vs. Red Sox
UPDATE, 12:07: Jennings said batting practice went well and he is ready to play. "Everything is pretty much normal,'' he said.
UPDATE, 11:31: OF prospect Desmond Jennings (left elbow) is feeling better and could return to action today, Maddon said.
UPDATE, 11:01: Pat Burrell will play RF in Clearwater on Sunday and has talked to the Rays about getting to do so more often. Maddon said they'd try it more during the spring but was noncommital about doing so during the season.
UPDATE, 10:17: Here is the Red Sox lineup:
UPDATE, 10:14: Class A Charlotte manager Jim Morrison was named the Rays player development man of the year for 2009, and Tampa-based East Coast cross-checker Kevin Elfering was named their Scout of the Year.
UPDATE, 9:18: The Red Sox are sending their new starting infield to this game, with 3B Adrian Beltre, SS Marco Scutaro, 2B Dustin Pedroia and 1B Kevin Youkilis on the travel squad even though they have another squad playing in Fort Myers.
UPDATE, 8:32: OF prospect Desmond Jennings, sidelined since being hit by a pitch Wednesday, said his left elbow was feeling better and he should return to the field soon; he is on the travel roster for Sunday's game in Clearwater. Non-roster LHP R.J. Swindle, who left Friday's game with what the Rays said was a right oblique strain, said he was waiting on further tesing and evaluation. "I'm just waiting on a timetable, and hoping it's not too long,'' he said.
DEVELOPING: A (relatively) warm and sunny day with the Red Sox (or at least some of them as they have two games today) in town and a soldout Charlotte Sports Park is starting early today. Before taking the field this morning, the Rays will go through a media training session, so we're expecting really good quotes today.
Today's lineup features a look at what could just about be the opening day set-up, although with Andy Sonnanstine (or Wade Davis, depending on which sheet you look at it) on the mound and Gabe Kapler in rightfield.
The plan, as of now:
