Gameday report: Rays vs. Twins
UPDATE, 12:06: The Rays may have something soon on the status of INF Dan Johnson, who is expected to clear waivers. If so, he is expected to be offered, and accept, an outright assignment to Triple-A Durham.
UPDATE, 11:47: The injury news - Willy Aybar (left hamstring) and Matt Joyce (right elbow strain) may both miss the season opener - topped the morning, though Maddon also talked about the competition for the final bullpen spot coming down to spring performances by Joaquin Benoit, Mike Ekstrom, longshot Heath Rollins and Dale Thayer. He also said there will be changes in ways the Rays hitters will use make use of video before series, as the Rays will join other teams in offering the hitters mobile video - in their case loading it on mini hard drives - so they can watch at their convenience. Other teams have done it with iPod video. ... Maddon will some guests at today's game, including Bucs tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts and Michael Stewart, proprietor of the 717 South restaurant in Tampa.
UPDATE, 10:31: If you've never seen a $184-million man, there will be one at Charlotte Sports Park today as Joe Mauer is in the lineup for the Twins. Here is the full Twins lineup:
UPDATE, 10:03: C Dioner Navarro was moving much better today, free of crutches following his Saturday collision that resulted in a nerve bruise in his left leg, and headed to the batting cage to swing for the first time since. .... There's a hitter's meeting this morning. ... Definite different feel to the clubhouse this morning following the hefty cut on Wednesday, with 11 players sent out. That leaves 34 on the roster, though one is J.P. Howell, who is headed to the DL, and another is INF Elliot Johnson, who is unlikely to make the team but since he is out of options will be kept around until the end as the Rays try to make a deal or have to pass him through waivers.
DEVELOPING: The Rays are gathering for today's game against the Twins, with a bit of a different schedule as they don't go out on the field until 10:45.
