Hank Blalock designated for assignment; Gabe Kapler activated from DL
With OF Gabe Kapler ready to rejoin the Rays, Hank Blalock became the odd man out.
Kapler (right hip flexor strain) was activated from the disabled list Tuesday night, and will be with the team Wednesday in Boston. Manager Joe Maddon praised Blalock for his professionalism, his work ethic, and impact in the clubhouse, but said there simply weren't enough at-bats or opportunities for him.
"This guy is a real pro, I thought he did a great job for us in the clubhouse," Maddon said. "His work ethic is spectacular. I wish I had a longer time to work with this fellow, because he's an interesting young man....He made a really good impression on all of us."
Blalock took the news in stride. The two-time All-Star, who was trying to rejuvenate his career with the Rays after signing a minor league deal in March, said he will go back home to San Diego and hopes to land another job. But he appreciated his time with the Rays, and had high praise for them.
“This team is capable of winning the World Series,” Blalock said. “And if there’s no other jobs out there in the American League, I hope they do.”
