Howell has "definite" setback, status unclear

UPDATE, 6:12: Howell may be seen tonight by Dr. Koco Eaton, but it still sounds like there won't be much of an official update provided until Tuesday.

"J.P. did not have a good day,'' Maddon said. "We're going to have to re-evaluate it. I don't know what the next step is right yet but did not feel good following his throwing today. He threw some pitches that looked kind of normal to me, and then all of a sudden he just did not want to throw anymore. I asked him if he felt pain and he had a hard time describing that to me, and I did not want to press him on it. ... I don't know what it is, I just know that it didn't feel good.''

After being evaluated by head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield, Howell - normally one of the most outgoing and accomodating players on the team - left Tropicana Field without talking to reporters, which can also be considered a sign of his frustration with the setback.

"He's definitely been tabled,'' Maddon said. "Absolutely it's a setback, there's no question. Definite setback. Obviously. our bullpen has been doing a great job, but it was really exciting the idea of getting him back really soon, and what he would do for us. So that part of it is a setback, however, the guys that have been here have been doing a great job and I expect them to continue to do a great job and then we have other folks that are able to help us that are not here right now. It's one of those things that happens, it's baseball. Stuff like this happens and you have to have depth and you have to have the people to move beyond these moments, and I know we do. So it's unfortunate, the guys to this point have picked him up and I believe they will continue to do so.''

UPDATE, 4:59: Rays manager Joe Maddon said it was "definitely a setback" for Howell, and "not a good day," will be re-evaluated by doctors, Rays should know more on Tuesday.

DEVELOPING: LHP J.P. Howell's simulated game didn't go well - shut down after 12 pitches, didn't look happy, in trainer's room now. And it appeared that a teammate just brought in his clothes so he may not be available to the media at his locker.
