It's BBWAA awards week, with top rookies tonight
It's the big week for baseball's awards, with the four major honors in each league presented - under a new format - on MLB Network shows each night from 6-7.
The award that has most interest for Rays fans is the AL Cy Young, which will be announced Wednesday, at about 6:17 p.m. While it will be live on MLB Network and bbwaa.com, we will have extensive coverage here and in the Thursday Times.
The week kicks off tonight with announcement of the AL and NL Rookies of the Year.
Going into the season, Rays LHP Matt Moore was considered among the favorites for the AL Award, but he had a slow start and an inconsistent year, and then Trout happened - the emergence of Angels OF Mike Trout, who is likely to be the unanimous winner.
Another factor, which has been an ongoing subject of discussion, is that players who played at the top levels in their home countries are still considered rookies in the majors, as the two other finalists are Texas RHP Yu Darvish, who starred previously in his native Japan, and Oakland OF Yeonis Cespedes, of Cuba.
The NL vote should be more suspenseful. The finalists are Reds INF/OF Todd Frazier, Nationals OF Bryce Harper and D-backs P Wade Miley.
The Manager of the Year awards will be presented Tuesday, the Cy Youngs on Wednesday and the MVP Awards on Thursday, again all live from 6-7 on MLB Network.
