It's David Price (and Astro) Day in Tampa
Rays LHP David Price was honored Tuesday for his AL Cy Young Award as Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn presented him and his dog Astro keys to the city.
"It's cool to come out here and be able to do this,'' Price said. "To be a part of the city of Tampa and have everybody come out and support me here today was a great feeling.''
Price joked that he was going make every Tuesday "David Price Day" and that he hoped to use his key to get Chick-Fil-A restaurants to open on Sundays, which they are not. "I don't know what else I'm going to do with this yet, Ill just try it on different locks,'' he said.
Buckhorn said the key ceremony, and accompanying proclamation, was his privilege given the national acclaim Price - who lives in Tampa - received. "I know David, I know what a standup guy he is, I know what he represents, I know what he embodies, it's indicative of the entire organization,'' Buckhorn said. "To know that a Tampa resident and a member of our team was named basically the most valuable player really is an honor. So for me to be able to do this is the least that I could do for him.''
City records are incomplete, but Buckhorn said the only other athlete he knew of receiving a key to the city was Olympic sprinter Tianna Madison, who won a gold medal at the London Games.
