Jose Lima's death hits home for Rays senior VP Gerry Hunsicker

There was a moment of silence before today's Rays-Astros game at Minute Maid Park to honor former Astros All-Star RHP Jose Lima, who died this morning at the age of 37 of an apparent heart attack.

The death hit home for Rays senior VP Gerry Hunsicker, who spent nine years as Astros GM and had plenty of memories with the animated right-hander.

“He was that shining light, that when he walked into the room, he made everybody feel better,” Hunsicker said. “He became the center of attention, in a good way. “He just loved life and every day was a walk in the park for Jose.”

Hunsicker remembered during one group dinner with some Astros players years ago in spring training, when he got on stage and performed a duet with Lima, who had a meringue band. “I think the players that night saw a side of me that they probably had never seen up to that point and probably never saw again,” Hunsicker said. "But it was a lot of fun and it exemplified the fun-loving person that Jose was."
