Kotchman: Youkilis "didn't do it on purpose"

The video looks a bit damning, but Rays 1B Casey Kotchman said he did not think Boston's Kevin Youkilis kicked his heel intentionally during the ninth inning of Tuesday's game.

"I know he didn't do it on purpose,'' Kotchman said.

Kotchman had a bruise above his left ankle and said he was on anti-inflammatory medication Tuesday night to keep it from getting worse, but won't have any issues playing tonight.

Youkilis - who was running well inside the baseline - said it was unintentional, and also claimed he didn't hit Kotchman that hard.

“It was just my toe kind of just glanced over top of him,'' Youkilis said.

Youkilis said Kotchman’s foot was over the top of the bag and, as a first baseman himself, those kinds of contact happen more than you think.

“It just happens,” Youkilis said. “It doesn’t happen all the time, but sometimes you get nipped a little bit. I asked (Kotchman) if he was okay,
and he said he was fine. From what it looked like, it looked like he blew out. I didn’t think I got him that good, but maybe if you hit him on the right spot, guys can feel that. And I’m glad he’s okay.”

Rays manager Joe Maddon said during his late-afternoon media session he still had not seen the video but "didn't want to believe" that Youkilis would do so intentionally.
