L.A. Times writer: Rays fans the worst

Los Angeles Times national baseball writer Kevin Baxter decided to rank the best and worst fan bases, and guess who came out at the bottom:

Rays fans.

Writes Baxter: "Management gave away tickets to draw respectable crowds during a pennant race last fall. The Rays are good and exciting, but few in Tampa Bay care.''

Baxter has at least been to the Trop a few times, which puts him ahead of some other critics. But his facts are a bit off, as the Rays had just a one-night free ticket offer, which turned out to be the for the game after they clinched a playoff spot (and stars David Price and Evan Longoria had sounded off about the low crowds).

Baxter's rankings, which appear to be based on opinion and average attendance, were somewhat predictable at the top, and then a bit curious:

1. Red Sox
2. Cardinals
3. Yankees
4. Phillies
5. Giants
6. Cubs
7. Tigers
8. Dodgers
9. Angels
10. Brewers

And his worst (knowing he used to work at the Miami Herald):
21. Mariners
22. Reds
23. Nats
24. Braves
25. D-backs
26. Jays
27. A's
28. Indians
29. Marlins
30. Rays
