OF Sam Fuld starts play today leading the American League with a .396 overall batting average, as well as home batting average (.481, 13-for-27) and night batting average (.500, 14-for-28). He is second in average against righthanders (.447, 17-for-38). Also he is hitting .421 (8-for-19) when leading off an inning.

He is the only player in the majors with two four-hit games this season, and according to the Elias Sports Bureau the first Ray to have two four-hit games out of the leadoff spot since Carl Crawford in 2005.

The Rays are 7-4 since Fuld moved into the leadoff spot.

His seven stolen bases are tops in the AL and one behind the Dodgers Matt Kemp and the Pirates Jose Tabata for the major-league lead. He is also fourth in the AL with 21 hits, tied for fifth with six doubles, fifth with a .431 on-base percentage, sixth with a .604 slugging percentage and fifth with a 1.035 OPS. He is third toughest player in the AL to strike out, averaging 14.5 plate appearances per K (4 in 58).

 Fuld's .396 average is the second best mark in club history at this date behind Fred McGriff's .400 in 1998 (minimum 50 plate appearances).
