Live from Indy: Wednesday night edition
UPDATE, 1:14 AM: The Red Sox reportedly agreed to trade 3B Mike Lowell to Texas for C Max Ramirez, potentially clearing the way to make a run at adding free agent Adrian Beltre.
UPDATE, 11:45: The Rays are close to making the deal for Rafael Soriano and it could be finalized sometime Thursday, pending a standard medical review.
UPDATE, 8:47: The most entertaining rumor of the night - no matter how unlikely - is that the Red Sox are interested in Milton Bradley in exchange for Mike Lowell. Media from both markets have pretty much dismissed it. ... The Angels are reportedly offering LHP Joe Saunders, SS Erick Aybar and a prospect for Toronto's RHP Roy Halladay, and the Phillies are also planning a bid. ... The AL East got a little more competitive as the Orioles acquired ace RHP Kevin Millwood from Texas in exchange for Tampa product RH reliever Chris Ray. “I think it makes us much better,’’ O’s GM Andy MacPhail said.
DEVELOPING: The Rays are having serious talks with the Braves about RHP Rafael Soriano, but it sounds like a nunber of hurdles remain before there could be a deal. Biggest could be the dollars, as the Rays try to fit Soriano's expected $7-million or so salary into their payroll - and noting that principal owner Stuart Sternberg said just last week: "There's no $7-million closer showing up.''
Braves GM Frank Wren told the Journal-Constitution there was "no discussion" about money, but it seems the Rays would want to get them to kick in some money - perhaps by offering better prospects? Soriano also has to approve the trade, though that seems likely since he would get the chance to close, and it would be relatively close to his native Dominican Republic.
The Rays will consider moving up in the Rule 5 draft on Thursday morning, and also could lose some prospects, with RHP Aneury Rodriguez (acquired from Colorado for Jason Hammel) and RHP Paul Phillips considered most likely.
