UPDATE, 7:27: Rays executive VP Andrew Friedman wouldn't talk specificially about an Escobar deal, but said they had a series of talks on a number of different fronts, free agents, trades involving starters and trades not involving starters. And he sounded like they might make a deal in the next day or two.

"We've got a lot of balls in the air,'' he said. "It's tough to handicap the chances, but there's a real chance we leave here with more clarity than we had coming in.''

BREAKING: There's been a lot more talking than action today at the winter meetings, which is typical for the second full day as teams sort through their options.

For the Rays, that includes continuing talks with the Marlins for SS Yunel Escobar, who would add an interesting glove and bat, and a reasonable contract - $5-million this season, and $5-million options for the next two.

The Marlins are "getting closer" to a decision, and there is some talk that the Rays may be the frontrunners. It is not known yet what they would giv e up.

The A's, Yankees and Cardinals are also said to be interested.

The Rays are also continuing to talk about their pitchers, and there was some lobby chatter that they were talking Tuesday with the Rangers about James Shields, who would be their alternative to free agent Zack Greinke. Also related is whether the Rangers re-sign Josh Hamilton, because that would make them more likely to trade for a starter than sign a free agent.

Escobar, 30, hit .253 with 9 homers and 51 RBIs last season for Toronto.
