Live from Port Charlotte: Day 1
UPDATE, 2:10: Manager Joe Maddon was generally pleased with the day, saying he was impressed with the conditioning and attitude of the players. His pre-workout address focused on the same themes from Thursday's media session - the importance of doing the little things well.
UPDATE, 11:48: Soriano left the field right after stretching, the team said, because he had "a respiratory cold" and won't go back out today.
UPDATE, 11:43: All players were on the field, as manager Joe Maddon addressed the group. LHPs Carlos Hernandez and Alex Torres were late getting out as they they finished their physicals and RHP Rafael Soriano, their prized acquisition, headed back into the clubhouse with head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield though it's not clear why.
DEVELOPING: The first workout of the spring starts at 10, with all 27 pitchers and eight catcher (including INF Joe Dillon) expected to participate. Among other things, it will be the first look at new closer Rafael Soriano in a Rays uniform. The pitchers will all throw bullpen sessions from 11-11:50, and the workout will wrap up at around 12:40.
Principal owner Stuart Sternberg was around on Thursday, but he will address the media today, at approximately 10:30.
