Live from Port Charlotte, Day 8: Brrrr, then warmer
UPDATE, 3:01: The Rays got in another solid day of work, with four of the projected starters (James Shields, Matt Garza, Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis) throwing live batting practice. Reliever Joaquin Benoit, trying to come back after missing the 2009 season following shoulder surgery, had a solid session as well. "Exactly how I remember him,'' CF B.J. Upton said.
The Rays also firmed up plans to hold an intrasquad game on Tuesday morning, primarily so they can work on things like bunt plays at game speed, with all players scheduled to participate.
UPDATE, 11:25: It's actually warmed up quite a bit and turned into a pleasant day as several of the Rays top starters have been throwing live batting practice - James Shields, Matt Garza, Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis.
DEVELOPING: The Rays will be back on the field this morning, and they'll be bundled up with temperatures this morning in the low 40s. At least, thus far anyway, there isn't as much wind as Thursday, so it may be more tolerable.
It's also photo day, with the players going through the routine of stopping at several stations and looking into the camera for images that are used for head shots, baseball cards and other purposes.
The highlight of the day should start around 11:15, with James Shields, Matt Garza, Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis among those scheduled to throw live batting practice.
