Live from Port Charlotte: Zimmer meets bear

Friday morning at Rays camp started with an impromptu photo shoot. Also, 2B/RF Ben Zobrist reported to camp, which means all the rostered position players came in early.

But back to the event. Rays PR staff Andrew Heydt had the first and only actual Zim Bear sent down to Port Charlotte and handed it off to Zimmer, the 81-year-old senior adviser, as he walked in the door. Zimmer, still amazed by the attention the bear has generated didn't have much more to say. "I don't know what to think,'' he said.

The Zimmer promotion is scheduled for June 29, to be given out to the first 10,000 fans.

As for the other guys in camp, today is day four of pitcher/catcher workouts, with the bulk of the rotation - James Shields, Wade Davis, David Price and Matt Moore scheduled to throw bullpen sessions.

With Zobrist reporting the only position players who have not yet reported are non-roster invitees Brad Coon, Jesus Feliciano, Hak-Ju Lee, Juan Miranda. The position player reporting date is Saturday and the first full-squad workout on Sunday.

Later Friday, manager Joe Maddon opened his post-practice media session with the bear on his shoulder.
