Lobaton appears headed to the DL, Gimenez likely replacement
C Jose Lobaton appears headed to the DL due to soreness in his right shoulder, with Chris Gimenez expected to be activated from the Triple-A DL, called up and in the Sunday lineup.
The Rays were hoping Lobaton would test the shoulder by throwing today but he said he did not feel up to it. "I don't think it's a good day to throw,'' he said.
The lack of progress essentially forces the Rays to make a move, as veteran Jose Molina will have played three straight days by the end of the day today - having finished Thursday's game, then all of Friday and today - which is more than the Rays want to push him.
Manager Joe Maddon said a decision was coming either later today or Sunday morning.
Gimenez, 29, was a late signing before spring training after being designated for assignment by the Mariners on Feb. 7. He has 97 games of big-league experience (and 42 starts behind the plate) with Seattle and Cleveland - though only a .171 batting average - and was sent down near the end of spring training. He had been on the seven-day DL with a groin strain and is eligible to return on Sunday.
