Loney liked chance to play, and for a contender
New Rays 1B James Loney said the chance to play regularly and to play for a contender were behind hs decision to sign with the Rays.
"Those were the key factors,'' he said.
Loney, on a conference call with Tampa Bay media the day after his $2-million deal became official, said he had good things about the Rays and manager Joe Maddon. Also, that he knows RHP Jeff Niemann as they went to high school near each other in the Houston area, and he worked out last off-season with a group that included LHP Cesar Ramos.
Loney is coming off a career-worst offensive season but said he is already hard at work correcting things.
"Some times I felt like my timing was off a little bit and it affected my swing,'' he said. "I've just been working really hard keeping the same timing device and staying with that and being comfortable in that position.''
Loney said there were a few other teams interested.
