Longoria dehydrated, won't play today
Evan Longoria was scratched from the Rays lineup today.
He said he was dehydrated and had cramps, and had been feeling that way on Saturday as well when he left the game in the fourth inning.
Longoria is here in Dunedin, and participated in pre-game workouts and said if it was the regular season he would get an IV and play. But with the Rays off on Monday he felt it was better to rest on Sunday.
"I came in with the intent to play today, but I felt dehydrated (Saturday) and the same thing today, so I'll just drink lots of fluids and take the off-day,'' Longoria said. "I told Joe if it was Day 1 or Day 100 of the season, I'm playing. ... It's just one of those ailment type things and I just have to let it pass and fill myself up with as much fluids as I can.''
Manager Joe Maddon said the continued cramping raised the concern of dehydration so they made what was an easy decision, with Sean Rodriguez sliding over to third base and Elliot Johnson starting at second. "We just didn't want to push it right now,'' Maddon said. "It's really just a cramping issue that we want to get rid of, there's nothing else going on.''
