Longoria now eyeing Tuesday, Moore on mound, Hellickson renewed
UPDATE, 2:47: Moore threw a 32-pitch bullpen back in Port Charlotte, sticking just to fastballs and changeups, and felt good, pitching coach Jim Hickey said. Moore will get one day off and throw again on Monday.
BREAKING: 3B Evan Longoria said his bruised right hand is feeling better but is still swollen and he is eyeing a Tuesday exhibition debut.
Manager Joe Maddon said he was planning for Monday, but Longoria said this morning that was "a little optimistic" and that it would be "silly" to rush it. He is planning on Tuesday and said he was "99 percent" sure of it.
LHP Matt Moore said his return to the mound has been accelerated and he would throw a bullpen session today. Moore has been limited to rest and playing catch since last Friday due to a mild lower abdominal strain.
RHP Jeremy Hellickson, a Scott Boras client, said he had his contract renewed for $489,000 rather than take the Rays offer, which was $5,000 hgher. "It was just a matter of following the advice I was given,'' Hellickson said. "Right now I think that was the best thing for me to do and now I'm ready to play baseball.''
