Maddon gives "tribute" to Bucs by wearing helmet during press conference
Manager Joe Maddon has talked about wearing a Bucs helmet during a press conference the past few weeks, wanting to give a "tribute" to his friends over there. Part of it was to return the favor to buddy, Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris, who has worn Rays gear, including a Bucs-colored baseball cap during camp. But Maddon wanted to wait until after a home sweep to do it.
So after Sunday's victory, Maddon donned a Bucs helmet while fielding the first few minutes of questions. He played the part, holding his lineup card over his face like football coaches' do with their play sheet, referring to the "Seahawks" and Ben Zobrist making a defensive play as Joe Montana going to his right. Bench coach Dave Martinez even got into the act, interrupting the press conference to give Maddon a Gatorade water bottle.
Maddon attended the Bucs exhibition loss to the Patriots last Thursday night, on the team's off-day.
"We got a big game this weekend against Miami, we're very excited bout that," Maddon said. "This is a tribute to our friends over there at One Buc Place."
