Rays manager Joe Maddon had a parting gift Thursday for a heckling fan at Nationals Park: a personalized pine-tar smudged ball.
Maddon was being heckled extensively by the fan, who the Washington Post identified as Robin Ficker, who is well known in the D.C. area as a master heckler, and who used to be a regular behind the bench at NBA games.
Thursday, Ficker was on Maddon about the pine tar issue, so Maddon decided to answer back with a gift.
"He was getting on me about pine tar in general,'' Maddon said. "So I put a dab of pine tar on a ball and I wrote on it, Stick up for those you care (about).''
Ficker told the Post, "You have to love the fact that he’s sensitive, but he has a good sense of humor.''
