Maddon impressed with Desmond Jennings' instincts

Manager Joe Maddon heard about the athleticism and skills of touted OF prospect Desmond Jennings.

But after getting to see Jennings for the first time up close recently (Jennings will start in rightfield today) Maddon said what he's really impressed with is Jennings' instincts, both on the bases and in the field. Maddon pointed to Jennings approach while a baserunner at second base Sunday ("Everything he did was perfect") and how he was totally under control when he caught popups in right.

"He just has a good feel for this game, he sees things, he makes reads, his mind is in advance of the situation automatically," Maddon said.  That's what I'm really impressed about...He does not waste any moments out there, he doesn't turn it off for like 10 seconds and try to turn it back on. He knew exactly what he wanted to do at every moment at second base yesterday. We work hard to teach guys that, but he already knows how to do this...I think what you saw, what he is, is pretty much innate."

The Rays outfield will have an interesting look today, with Jennings in right, B.J. Upton in center and Carl Crawford in left. And Maddon said that was by design, to see what the three would look like together.
