Maddon: Manny called, said he was disappointed in himself
Manager Joe Maddon revealed today that Manny Ramirez called him Friday after the decsion to retire following a positive drug test and said he was disappointed in himself. Ramirez he did not explain or apologize for his actions, and Maddon said he didn't ask him to.
"He expressed disappointment in himself to me,'' Maddon said, "but also had really high praise for us as an organization, as a group, so I felt pretty good about that.''
Asked if Ramirez apologized, Maddon said: "He just said he was disappointed, he didn't necessarily apologize. And I wasn't looking for an apology actually. I wasn't. He spoke to me kinda like man to man, person to person, manager to player kind of a thing. So I didn't think he owed me an apology.''
Maddon said he told Ramirez he wanted to consider himself a friend going forward, was glad to hear Ramirez's praise of the organization, and was impressed that Ramirez was moved to call, and "I was pretty much taken by it because I didn't expect that to happen.'' Maddon said.
