Maddon named AL's Manager of the Year by Sporting News

Rays manager Joe Maddon has been named American League Manager of the Year by the Sporting News.

It's the second time he's won this award, which was voted on by the AL's managers. He also won in 2008, when he also took the AL Manager of the Year honors from Baseball Writers Association of America. That award will be announced in mid-November.

The Diamondbacks' Kirk Gibson earned NL Manager of the Year Honors from the Sporting News.

Tampa Bay lost its first six games, but had a historic September comeback in which it won 17 of its final 25 and earned the AL's Wild Card on the final day of the season.

"We are the best 0-6 team in the history of Major League Baseball," Maddon said at the end of the year press conference. "It was a huge success this year, and anybody that wants to argue otherwise, please come by. I'd be happy to engage in that discussion."

The Rays could be in for more awards this week, as Sporting News is releasing it's Comeback Player (Tuesday), Rookies of the Year (Wed) and All-Star teams (Thursday).
