Maddon: Umps' explanation is also wrong

Manager Joe Maddon, acknowledging that his Tuesday night outburst at the umpires might have been his most volatile in the big leagues, felt just as strongly Wednesday that the crew made the wrong decision for the wrong reasons on Tuesday, when home plate ump Angel Hernandez refused to grant time out to Carlos Pena.

Informed that crew chief Joe West told the Times that the call was the correct one and was based more on protecting pitcher Kevin Gregg than the effort to speed-up games, Maddon again begged to differ.

"That does not placate me in the least. ... I do disagree with that,'' Maddon said. "I believe it has everything to do with pace of the game, and you could write that. Absolutely. There's no question in my mind.''

West, the veteran umpire who has seems to have made pace of game his personal crusade, made a similar decision to not grant a time out for Carl Crawford when the Rays were playing in Chicago in April. "Tie it all together,'' Maddon said.
