Manager Joe Maddon ejected in seventh inning
Manager Joe Maddon was ejected in the seventh inning Thursday by second base umpire Gary Cederstrom for arguing over a balk called on RHP Matt Garza.
It was Maddon's third ejection of the season.
The scene was eerily similar to the one that occured Wednesday night, when a controversial balk was called on Rays starter James Shields. Just like then, a Padres hitter led off with a single (Will Venable), and just like then, a balk advanced him to second with no outs. Maddon slowly walked to the mound, and after the umpires converged, got in a heated argument before getting tossed.
This balk didn't hurt as much as Wednesday, however, as the Rays caught Venable in a rundown between second and third on a grounder to short by Jerry Hairston, Jr., pulling off a double play with Evan Longoria tagging Venable and throwing out Hairston at second.
