Mariners trade Cliff Lee to Rangers
Update (5:05 p.m.): The Seattle Mariners have traded Cliff Lee and reliever Mark Lowe to Texas for first baseman Justin Smoak and three other minor-leaguers.
Update (4:25 p.m.): The New York Post is now reporting that the Mariners have pulled out of a potential deal that would have sent Cliff Lee to the Yankees.
Developing: Reports are swirling this morning that the Mariners are set to trade LHP Cliff Lee, and it's not good news for the Rays because he's supposedly headed to the Yankees.
The deal, first reported by the New York Post, is said to be imminent, which it kind of has to be since Lee is scheduled to pitch against the Yankees tonight in Seattle. The centerpiece prospect going to Seattle would be C Jesus Montero.
ESPN's Buster Olney quotes an executive involved in the talks saying the deal is "just about done.''
There are additional rumors the Yankees will then trade RHP Javier Vazquez, with some reports suggesting he could go to Philadelphia for outfielder Jayson Werth.
There have been reports that the Rays were interested in Lee, but their primary need is a big bat to stabilize their lineup.
