Matt Silverman on the Tampa Bay Rays' stadium issue, Carl Crawford's contract situation, and more

February

Tampa Bay Rays president Matt Silverman addresed the media during the team's first full squad workout, and said the team is keeping tabs on the discussion in Pinellas and Hillsborough County regarding a potential new stadium.

"It's something that we monitor," Silverman said. "We read every newspaper article, we watch the TV shows. It's important that there's a regional dialogue and we’re encouraged that the regional dialogue is taking place. Our fous is on getting ready for the season but we expect that dialogue will continue and hopefully lead to good ends."

*Silverman also talked about the pending free agency of LF Carl Crawford, which has been a big topic among fans. Silverman said he doesn't think the situation will be a distraction to Crawford, or the team, and said talks are ongoing.

"It's something we're focused on," he said. "Carl is one of a number of players who are in the last year of their contract and we’re always looking at the future. But it's probably too early to talk abut that right now."

Silverman said Crawford is in the "best shape of his life" and they expect big things from him this season. The same goes for the entire Rays team.

"Expectations are high for what I think is the most talented and deepest squad we've ever opened camp with," Silverman said. "When we talk about playing meaningful games in September, when we talk about the postseason, it's a challenge for this club. We know the AL East is a tough challenge, but we've been up for that challenge before, and we're ready to do it again this year."
