Meetings update: Rays still all talk

December

The Rays continue talking with other teams and free agents, but as of Wednesday evening were at a point where it didn't look like anything would get done at the meetings, which break mid-day Thursday.

Executive VP Andrew Friedman said the talks have been productive in terms of some potential future deals.

"We've in the last 24 hours had a number of productive conversations, some that have kind of been off-shoots of talks that we had had in the preceding days,'' Friedman said. "Trades are so difficult to characterize, but I do feel there is decent momentum on a couple of fronts that have a chance to materialize. Whether that's in a day or in a month, that's tough to say. But there are certain spots where ideally we'd be more aggressive and take care of so we could take care of other areas. It doesn't always work out that way.''

There has been considerable speculation that the Rays could have heavy interest if the Marlins make 1B Gaby Sanchez available, but it is worth noting that given the makeup of their lineup, they would prefer their first baseman hit lefthanded. Free agents Casey Kotchman and Carlos Pena would certainly fit.

Also:

 * Free agent OF/DH Josh Willingham remains a possibility. He is expected to decline arbitration from Oakland.

* The Rays have an open roster spot and will look, but are not likely to make a selection in Thursday's Rule 5 draft of players not on 40-man rosters.

* The player to be named in the John Jaso/Seattle trade will not be named as a product of the Rule 5 draft.
